Sainsbury’s Announce Plans for New Store at Weymouth Gateway

The people of Weymouth may soon be able to ‘Taste the Difference’ as Sainsbury’s has this week revealed it has signed an agreement with New Look to become part of the Weymouth Gateway development.

Sainsbury’s has agreed to operate the 4,000 sq m store that forms part of the revised plans for a mixed-use development at New Look’s Mercery Road site in Weymouth.
Alastair Miller, CFO from New Look said: “This is a really positive step forward in enabling us to deliver not only more choice to shoppers in Weymouth, but also the regeneration of the site as a whole. We know from feedback received during the public consultation process that there is strong demand in Weymouth for the choice and range of quality products and fair prices that Sainsbury’s offers.”

Plans for the redevelopment of the New Look site were revealed earlier this summer during a two-day public exhibition, and members of the public were encouraged to give feedback on the proposals.

The new Sainsbury’s store forms part of the outline plans for the site due to be submitted to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council this Autumn, which include new offices for New Look, additional office and employment space, and a hotel and family restaurant.

The site as a whole will deliver around 1,000 new and retained jobs, including approximately 400 jobs that will be created by the new Sainsbury’s store.

Jamie Baker, Head of Development South from Sainsbury’s, said: “I’m pleased to confirm Sainsbury’s involvement in the Weymouth Gateway development. We are committed to working with New Look and the local community to ensure everyone has the opportunity to contribute to our proposals throughout the planning process. These are exciting proposals that we’re looking forward to discussing with the community during our public exhibitions later in the year.”

New Look is also currently in discussion with a number of other operators interested in developing the hotel, restaurant and employment elements of the site and hopes to announce further details in the near future.
