Following the unprecedented success over the last two years Spirit of the Sea 2010 – Weymouth & Portland’s Maritime Festival is set to be even bigger and better extending to 14 days. In 2009 there was a total of 50 maritime related events that took place in 33 venues across the borough. Highlights included Henri Lloyd Weymouth Regatta, Dorset Seafood Festival, Marinex Show, Maritime Modelling Festival, Beach Live, Gig Racing, and the fabulous ‘Moving Tides Children’s Procession’.

Spirit of the Sea showcases the maritime heritage of the area renowned for its ideal sailing waters and beautiful coastline: if your interest lies in watersports or maritime heritage there will be an event to excite you. There are also opportunities for those wanting to try a new sport; sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking or scuba diving there are plenty to choose from.

Look out for the many cultural events taking place over the 14 days. The main cultural events last year were the ‘Moving Tides – Children’s Procession’ with over 300 children taking part in a very colourful procession along the seafront and the Tudor Picnic at Sandsfoot Castle. There will be lots of talks about the history and heritage of the area from shipwrecks to the Royal Navy who played a major part in the areas recent past.
