The Artemis Offshore Academy will use the world class facilities at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) as one of the venues for the UK excellence training programme.  The Artemis Offshore Academy aims to help the best of British short-handed sailing talent win major offshore solo and short-handed races by creating the conditions that will foster the emergence of a stronger British force on the international short-handed scene.

The WPNSA will be working closely with the Artemis Offshore Academy supporting a UK training programme of excellence for British short-handed sailors, providing a structure to bring talented sailors up through the ranks.  Designed to help them win major offshore solo and short-handed races in the future, the ultimate goal is to put a British sailor in a strong position to win the Vendée Globe in 2016 or 2020.  The Artemis Offshore Academy will provide a structure that can help all whose potential is yet to be fully realised.

The newly launched Academy will operate from a variety of bases to maximize the effectiveness of the training in British waters during the summer, including extensive use of the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, The Solent and in the South of France, La Grande Motte, already an established French Figaro school during the winter. The WPNSA is one of the finest sailing locations in the UK, offering extensive facilities both on the water and on land.  It will be able to offer sailors of the Artemis Offshore Academy the combination of a sheltered harbour and more challenging meteorological and tidal conditions out in the bay.  As you would expect from a world class sailing venue, the WPNSA has all the right elements in place to offer a superb training ground.

John Tweed, Chief Executive at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy commented, “Looking across the channel, it is clear that French sailors’ success in short-handed sailing is backed by a strong network of training centres.  I have no doubt the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy has the world-class training facilities in place to harness the talent of the Artemis Offshore Academy sailors.”
